Today in a sort of bizarro Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, in advance of a major immigration speech, Donald Trump went to Mexico to meet with with president Enrique Peña Nieto.
One thing was on the mind of reporters there when the two gave a joint press conference. Whether Donald Trump’s long promised border wall, and his insistence that Mexico pay for it, was discussed.
Answering a reporter’s question, Trump said that while the wall was discussed, issues of payment were not.
“We did discuss the wall. We didn’t discuss payment of the wall.” (His comment starts at 9:28)
There you have it. Straight from Trump’s mouth.
Now, though, Peña Nieto took to Twitter to let everyone know that he told Trump no way, Joseph.
Al inicio de la conversación con Donald Trump dejé claro que México no pagará por el muro.
— Enrique Peña Nieto (@EPN) August 31, 2016
That says “At the beginning of the conversation with Donald Trump I made it clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall.”
Could it be that Peña Nieto wants to look tough to his country after Trump departed and that he’s lying?
Could it be that Trump didn’t want to tell reporters his first foray into international negotiations didn’t go so well?
Which do you think it is?
